Reading the Caribbean

How I am going to be reading Caribbean literature.

As a reader who has read from many countries, and diverse experiences, I saw that I lacked Caribbean voices and authors. When I consume book content online the Caribbean is not mentioned enough when I first started consuming social media book content (in my opinion). This has inspired me to make a resource that gathers as many Caribbean authors in one place. This blog will be a home to all the Caribbean books that I read in the form of reviews and lists of books from the Caribbean. I have adapted my reading to include my own heritage. My reading previously was shaped by an English education which mainly focused on England and USA white authors. Therefore I now make it a priority to read outside of that bubble.

Trying to read Caribbean authors will always be my intention, but in reality it is a slow process to read all the books I want to read from the Caribbean. I am slowly going through my own personal list of books I am interested in reading. I am also juggling this book exploration with reading a book from every country in the world. Of course the Caribbean is part of this project so it feeds into one another.

A starting point for this year are the books I currently own and I will prioritise those for the upcoming months. After these books I want to prioritise my own islands authors and a book I have been meaning to read because it seems so connected to my own research. ‘I Tituba black witch of salem’ by Maryse Conde is a priority for me. In my reviews I will be connecting my research when relevant and eventually include Caribbean literature in my research. So I hope you enjoy the journey of me reading the Caribbean.
